How the conversion works

DMS to decimal: DD = degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3600 (negative for S/W).
Decimal to DMS: degrees = floor(|DD|), minutes = floor(remainder × 60), seconds = remainder × 3600.
UTM: transverse Mercator projection (Snyder series) on the WGS84 ellipsoid (a = 6,378,137 m, 1/f = 298.257223563), scale factor k0 = 0.9996, 500,000 m false easting, 10,000,000 m false northing in the southern hemisphere. Zone = floor((lon + 180)/6) + 1.

Notes & limitations

All conversions assume the WGS84 datum (EPSG:4326), which is what GPS units and OpenStreetMap use. Older US data may be in NAD83 — the difference is under 2 m in most of the US, but verify for survey-grade work.
  • UTM is only defined between 84°N and 80°S; polar regions use UPS instead.
  • Points near a zone boundary: QGIS and GPS units pick the zone automatically, but double-check which zone your project uses — a point in the wrong zone can be off by hundreds of kilometers.
  • Hawaii spans UTM zones 4N (most islands) and 5N (Big Island east); the US East Coast is zones 17N–19N.
