Digester Heating Requirement Calculator
Mesophilic digesters need steady heat. Enter your sludge feed and tank details to estimate the daily heating load — sludge warm-up plus wall losses.

How the calculation works
Formulas
Sludge warm-up (BTU/day) = flow (gal/day) × 8.34 (lb/gal) × 1.0 (BTU/lb·°F) × (digester temp − incoming temp)
Wall loss (BTU/day) = U (BTU/hr·ft²·°F) × area (ft²) × (digester temp − surrounding temp) × 24 hr/day
Total heating = warm-up + wall loss
Sludge warm-up (BTU/day) = flow (gal/day) × 8.34 (lb/gal) × 1.0 (BTU/lb·°F) × (digester temp − incoming temp)
Wall loss (BTU/day) = U (BTU/hr·ft²·°F) × area (ft²) × (digester temp − surrounding temp) × 24 hr/day

Notes & limitations
The warm-up equation is the standard sensible-heat balance; wall loss follows Fourier conduction through the tank envelope (Metcalf & Eddy digester heat-balance approach). The 0.20 default U-value suits uninsulated concrete walls — insulated tanks run lower.
- This is a steady-state estimate. It omits floor losses, heat-exchanger inefficiency, piping losses, and the heat released by digestion itself (small).
- Size boilers/heaters for the winter design case, then add a safety margin (typically 15–25%) — not included here.
- Most of the recovered biogas heat goes right back into the digester; compare this load against your gas-production estimate to see the net surplus.
- Thermophilic operation (~130 °F) roughly doubles the warm-up load — verify temperature assumptions before sizing equipment.
