Water Hammer Surge Pressure Calculator
A valve slammed shut or a pump tripped can spike pressure far above normal operating levels. Enter the flow change and pipe properties to estimate the Joukowsky surge — and see whether your pipe class is at risk.

How the calculation works
Joukowsky equation (instantaneous velocity change):
ΔP = ρ · a · ΔV
Pressure wave speed in an elastic pipe:
a = √(Kw / ρ) / √[ 1 + (Kw/E) · (D/e) ]
Kw = bulk modulus of water ≈ 319,000 psi; ρ = 1.94 slugs/ft³; E = pipe elastic modulus; D/e = diameter-to-thickness ratio
ΔV from the flow change: ΔV = |Q1 − Q2| / A
psi = ρ·a·ΔV / 144; ft of head = psi × 2.3067
ΔP = ρ · a · ΔV

| Pipe material | E (psi) | Typical wave speed |
|---|---|---|
| Steel | 30 × 10⁶ | ~4,000 ft/s |
| Ductile iron | 24 × 10⁶ | ~3,900 ft/s |
| PVC | 400,000 | ~1,300 ft/s |
| HDPE | 130,000 | ~800 ft/s |
Notes & limitations
The Joukowsky equation gives the maximum surge for an instantaneous stop — the classic water-hammer reference (see AWWA M11, Steel Pipe: A Guide for Design and Installation, or any hydraulics text). Real closures take finite time; slower closure means lower surge.
- This is the worst-case (instantaneous) surge. If valve closure takes longer than 2L/a (the wave round-trip time), actual surge is lower — use the Allievi charts or method of characteristics for slow closures.
- Add the surge to the normal operating pressure and compare against the pipe pressure class plus any safety factor.
- Assumes the pipe is anchored against longitudinal movement (restraint factor c1 = 1.0) and the pipe runs full of air-free water.
- Column separation (negative pressures on the downsurge) is not evaluated here — it needs a full transient analysis.
